    • Cydulka RK, Emerman CL, Rowe BH, et al.: Differences between men and women in reporting of symptoms during an asthma exacerbation. Ann Emerg Med 2001, 38:123-128. This large multicenter study compares PEF rate with reported symptom severity between men and women with acute asthma. It shows that men are less likely than women to report severe asthma symptoms and activity limitations in the presence of airway obstruction. These results support the use of objective measures of airway obstruction when managing patients with acute asthma.
