Temperature profile calculations show that for a small uniformly heated sphere in the Rayleigh limit (i.e., where the particle radius a is much smaller than the irradiation wavelength) in a heat-conducting medium, the surface of the sphere is driven to higher temperatures the larger its diameter for laser pulses with a duration of 10 ns.

    • McGrath, T.E. Ph.D. Thesis, Brown University, 2000. The temperature of carbon particles suspended in water during irradiation with the 1064 nm output of the Q-switched Nd:YAG laser was estimated by fitting the light emission spectrum of the laser-heated particles to that of a blackbody. The results of preliminary experiments show the temperature of the particles to be on the order of 3000 K.
