A solution of 11-mercaptoundecanoic acid (65.5 mg, 0.3. mmol) in toluene (10 mL) was then gradually added to the resulting mixture while stirring vigorously, followed by dropwise addition of a freshly prepared aqueous solution of NaBH4 (0.30 M, 10 mL, 3.0 mmol). After stirring the mixture for 3 h, the organic layer was separated, washed with distilled water (3 x 100 mL), and concentrated to dryness under reduced pressure. The black solid thus obtained was washed ultrasonically with chloroform and filtered off to give the desired Au clusters. Thermogravimetric analysis revealed that the organic component of the product amounted to 33.7 wt%.

The freshly prepared anhydride-functionalized Au clusters were dissolved in THF (ca. 30 mL) and used immediately for subsequent immobilization on silica supports.
