note
-
The denomination 'Paraiyan' is used in this article in spite of its discriminating connotations for reasons of historicity. Expressions like 'Adidravida' or 'Dalit', which symbolize present aspirations of emancipation, would be anachronistic when applied to the period under discussion.

Wills of prominent Hindu merchants did, to my knowledge, include several bequests to domestic servants but no regulations concerning slaves. See, for instance: OIOC, Wills, L/AG/34/29/193, 1791 (part 2), pp. 639-46: will and admin. of Chokappa Chetti. However, a report referring to the early nineteenth-century situation admits that domestic servants were also held in Hindu households in some rare cases: British Parliamentary Papers. Minutes of Evidence before the Select Committee [. . .] 1831-2. Colonies. East India (Shannon, 1970, 6th reprint), pp. 572-3. Indrani Chatterjee has cautioned me from her experience with Fort William records that references to slavery could have been lost as the wills were translated.
