Inheritance of the cortical ER is shown to require actin-dependent attachment to the cell cortex, but not motor activity, for its entry into the growing bud. Perinuclear ER is associated with the nuclear envelope and undergoes dynamic microtubule-dependent movement during M phase.

The DNA J domain protein Aux1p is identified as a factor needed for the organisation of cortical, but not perinuclear, ER. Aux1p appears to be a bifunctional protein, the J domain being required for endocytosis but not cortical ER localisation.

A role for actin, Cdc1p, and Myo2p in the inheritance of late Golgi element in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. J Cell Biol. 153:2001;47-61. This paper describes the isolation of four classes, A-D, of mutants defective in Golgi inheritance in budding yeast. The class A phenotype is shown to be due to mutations in CDC1, thus causing defects in actin polarity and transport or retention of late Golgi membranes into the growing bud.

    • Seeman J., Pypaert M., Taguchi T., Malsam J., Warren G. Partitioning of the matrix fraction of the Golgi apparatus during mitosis in animal cells. Science. 295:2002;848-851. This work clearly demonstrates that the putative structural protein GM130 does not localise to the ER in brefeldin-A-treated or mitotic cells. GM130-positive structures, the remnants of the Golgi in mitosis, were observed to partition to the cell poles, and to form templates on which the Golgi would reassemble upon mitotic exit.
