Van Vleck, in his theory of spin-phonon relaxation of Kramers doublets [J.H. Van Vleck, Phys. Rev. 57, 426 (1940)], worked out the symmetry-breaking dynamical admixture of spin states with time-dependent phonon states. His derivation is rather involved. The same results for the relaxation rates can be obtained in the most straightforward way by switching to a rotating coordinate system coupled to the local crystal field.
