    • In a strict nomenclature, nucleosome core particles exactly contain 146 base pairs of DNA. In our case, as discussed in Section 2.1, depending on the experimental digestion conditions, the DNA length of our samples may differ. For simplicity, we will continue to name our materials nucleosome core particles, being aware that rigorously they are not.

    • 2 with the salt has been recently observed on solutions of apoferritin (D.N. Petsev, P.G. Vekilov, Phys. Rev. Lett. 84, 1339 (2000)). The authors suggest that this repulsion comes from hydration forces. In our case, this hypothesis could be considered. However, as far as we understand this effect, it seems that this kind of force cannot explain the difference observed between the different samples of NCP. Hydration effects occur but we do not treat implicitly their direct contribution in the following.
