    • In terms of quality, Reischauer believed that Japanese newspapers were unsurpassed: the Japanese on average are provided with fuller and more accurate newspaper coverage of both national and international news than in the world, and only an occasional newspaper elsewhere surpasses their great national dailies in either quantity or quality of news. Ibid., p. 220; Despite their left-leaning tendencies, Reischauer saw Japanese than those of Western industrial nations: the major dailies are definitely not mouthpieces of governmental indoctrination as they would be in a totalitarian society, nor are they tools of ownership or of some might be the case in the United States or Western Europe. In other words, candidates have been tailoring their campaign discourse to resemble the dramatic imagery and personal emotional appeals that are common in advertising copy. • Status of elite bureaucrats declines as Japan does
    • Ibid., pp. 29-35; The Japanese media have contributed to the decline in prestige of elite government bureaucrats through television broadcasts of prosecutors entering government ministries to arrest officials on charges corruption. Media disclosures about the lifestyles of bureaucrats also have accelerated public criticism of bureaucrats. Media willingness to focus on official misdeeds accompanies Japan's economic decline which has more receptive to negative information about elite bureaucrats who were once viewed as the mainstays and pillars of Japanese society. • Japan's reform debate: Patriotic concern or class interest? Or both?
    • In the name of global standards and economic liberalism, there is great pressure to deregulate the Japanese economy. Such deregulation would lead to the demise of the worker-centered company in favor of firms run principle of creating shareholder value. In the process, egalitarian and communitarian values such as self-restraint, cooperation, empathetic consideration for others, and doing a good job would be threatened. See
