1. The term "superweak anion" is used to draw attention to the conceptual connection between very weakly coordinating anions and superacid media, because both involve the virtual absence of basicity. Specifically, a superweak anion is the conjugate base of a superacid. We also use the term for an extremely weakly coordinating anion whose conjugate acid is unknown or has not yet been shown to be a superacid.
