    • Multilayers were deposited on spinning polished silicon wafers using a robot (StratoSequence V, Nanostrata Inc.) as described previously (ref 14). Ten layers of each polyelectrolyte were deposited from 1 mM solutions of polymer containing1.0 M salt (PSS/PDADMA and PSS/PAH) or0.2 M salt (PAA/PDADMA, pH 11).

    • Any anisotropic orientation of polymer chains induced by uniaxial swelling will, most likely, be lost as the salt ions "melt" the amorphous, glassy complex.

    • Note that these films exhibit high selectivity and low permeability to ions, as described in refs 5 and 6, despite the fact that they contain appreciable amounts of water.
