    • As described elsewhere, either the Butler-Volmer equation or Marcus theory can be used to model electron-transfer kinetics. We found that good fits could be obtained using bot theories and, therefore, the Butler-Volmer formalism was used, because it provided greater simplicity without compromising the fit. For a simple one-ET reaction that is not complicated by coupling/gating, forward and backward rate should be identical at equal overpotentials (Finklea, H. O. J. Electroanal. Chem. 2001, 495, 79-86). To achieve this and ensure that the Butler-Volmer equations give similar results to the Marcus theory, α was set to 0.5.

    • note
    • Around pH 7, cyclic voltammograms are more complicated due to a coupled protonation of His35, which affects the reduction potential of azurin (see for instance ref 52). Because the protonation/deprotonation rate lies in the order of the scan rates used, the shape of the voltammograms at pH 7 deviate profoundly from those shown for pH 4.

    • Figure 2 has a logarithmic scale for the scan rates. Therefore, the slopes observed in the these plots are logarithmic slopes.
