    • On Day 7 (Experiment 1) or 8 (Experiment 2), chicks were individually weighed and placed in weight groups with ranges of 5 g. After eliminating the heaviest and lightest groups, chicks were uniformly distributed among pens to provide 80 groups of six chicks with average weights within a range of <1 g. Average body weights at the start of the experimental period for Experiments 1 and 2 were 165 and 157 g, respectively.
