A DNA transfection system for generation of influenza A virus from eight plasmids
-
Hoffman E, Neumann G, Kawaoka Y, Hobom G, Webster RG: A DNA transfection system for generation of influenza A virus from eight plasmids. Proc Natl Acad Sci USA 2000, 97:6108-6113. This is a very elegant paper in which it is demonstrated that influenza viruses can be generated efficiently from only eight plasmids.

Epidermal immunization by a needle-free powder delivery technology: Immunogenicity of influenza vaccine and protection in mice
-
Chen D, Endres RL, Erickson CA, Weis KF, McGregor MW, Kawaoka Y, Payne LG: Epidermal immunization by a needle-free powder delivery technology: immunogenicity of influenza vaccine and protection in mice. Nat Med 2000, 6:1187-1190. This article describes a revolutionary vaccination technology based on epidermal needle-free powder delivery of viral antigen. Viral antigens delivered by this technology proved to be more immunogenic than after subcutaneous or intramuscular administration with epidermal immunization. A higher level of protective immunity was also achieved.
