41. [18a] The relative configuration of the ketal stereocenter was not determined, but was anticipated to be that represented in the schemes on the basis of the stereoelectronic effects of the cyclopropane ring.
42. [18b] Compound 26 could easily be separated from 24 and 25 by flash chromatography and then characterized, but its stability appeared to be limited as in time it reverted back to a mixture containing 24 and 25, probably due to the presence of unavoidable traces of moisture.
