Studies using polarized infrared external reflectance spectroscopy (PIERS) suggest that the reaction of small primary amines with a SAM that presents interchain anhydride groups proceeds in nearly quantitative yields. The yield for larger, sterically hindered amines will undoubtedly be lower. PIERS has been described previously: Porter, M. D. Anal. Chem. 1988, 60, 1143A-1155A.
