The Peierls instability is associated with a Charge Density Wave instability, which results from an important electron-phonon interaction inducing a periodical distortion of the crystal lattice and a spatial modulation of the charge density. In addition to the Peierls instability, there are other electronic instabilities that drive metal-insulator transitions. For example, the Spin Density Wave instability is related to the coupling in pairs of two electrons with opposite spins that induces a spatial modulation of the spin density and in a gap opening at the Fermi level. In low-dimensional, poorly conducting compounds, interstack spin-phonon coupling drives a magneto-elastic distortion of the lattice, i.e., the spin-Peierls transition, which induces a magnetic ordering (see ref. 1 and references therein).

    • The purpose of a temperature-pressure phase diagram is to determine the domains of temperatures and pressures in which a system is in its various possible states, insulating, metallic, or superconducting. In such a phase diagram, the boundary line between two domains refers to the critical temperature at a given pressure, or the critical pressure at a given temperature, at which the transition from one to the other state occurs. In the present research, other types of diagrams are also of interest, namely, temperature-magnetic field and temperature-chemical composition diagrams.
