Reduction of 4 by lithium aluminum hydride to give 3-(3,5-di-t-butylphenyl)thio-2-methyl-1-propanol. The ratio of the enantiomers was determined by chiral HPLC analysis (Chiracel OD®, eluted by hexane with 0.1% 2-propanol) to be 53:47.
