    • In addition, the copolymerization between 4 and styrene did not take place. We tried copolymerizing 4 with different molar contents of MMA. However, the molar content of the monomer 4 was not higher than 1 % in the copolymer. Of particular concern is that the allyl functionality might provide an effective site for chain transfer processes. Under such circumstances one might expect the compound 4 monomer to be incorporated as a terminal group. This would clearly place an upper limit on the loading of 4 within a high molecular weight polymer matrix. When the N-substituents in the maleic imide are an allyl methacrylate, one might expect the content of photochromic monomer to increase substantially. Work in this direction is in progress.
