The authors previously reported a prospective, double-blind, placebo controlled study of the use of 6 weekly intravesical instillation of bacilles Calmette-Guérin (BCG) in the treatment of IC. The mean follow-up was 8 months. The encouraging results demonstrated a 60% BCG response rate, compared with 27% placebo response rate. In this recent paper, they reported long-term mean follow-up (27 months), eight of nine (89%) of the responders continued to benefit from the therapy. A total of 637 eligible patients were entered into the study and were followed for symptoms of pain, urgency, and urinary frequency. Median follow-up was 31 months. Median duration of IC symptoms was 8 years. Although all symptoms fluctuated, there was no evidence of significant long-term change in overall disease severity.
