This paper reports on the reliability of ambulatory BP monitoring in a large population of mild hypertensive subjects. The authors demonstrate that ambulatory monitoring is a reliable test when mean 24-hour BP is consistent over time. In contrast, a poor performance of the technique can be seen in subjects with poorly reproducible 24-hour B P.

This is one of the lagest surveys in patients with borderline hypertension showing that white coat hypertension is associated with increased left ventricular mass and initial left ventricular remodeling. The similar 24-hour BP found in the normotensive participants and the patients with white coat hypertension indicates that cardiac changes are due to white coat hypertension and not to higher ambulatory BP.
