Prevalence of various respiratory viruses in the middle ear during acute otitis media

see comments
-
8 Heikkinen T, Thint M, Chonmaitree T: Prevalence of various respiratory viruses in the middle ear during acute otitis media [see comments]. N Engl J Med 1999, 340:260-264. Respiratory syncytial virus was the most prevalent virus identified from children with acute otitis media. Invasion of the middle ear by RSV was demonstrated. This study strongly suggests that RSV plays a major role in the pathogenesis of acute otitis media.

9 Eskola J, Hovi T: Respiratory viruses in acute otitis media [editorial; comment]. N Engl J Med 1999, 340:312-314. This editorial comment discusses the results of numerous studies concerning the importance of respiratory viruses in otitis media. The conclusions are clear: prevention of respiratory viral infection will likely reduce the incidence of otitis media.

Respiratory syncytial virus pneumonia among the elderly: An assessment of disease burden
-
10 Han LL, Alexander JP, Anderson LJ: Respiratory syncytial virus pneumonia among the elderly: an assessment of disease burden. J Infect Dis 1999, 179:25-30. Respiratory syncytial virus is an important cause of respiratory tract disease among the elderly. The incidence and direct medical costs of RSV pneumonia among the elderly are substantial and warrant evaluation of an RSV vaccine in this population.

Interferon gamma expressed by a recombinant respiratory syncytial virus attenuates virus replication in mice without compromising immunogenicity

44 Bukreyev A, Whitehead SS, Bukreyeva N, Murphy BR, Collins PL: Interferon gamma expressed by a recombinant respiratory syncytial virus attenuates virus replication in mice without compromising immunogenicity. Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A 1999, 96:2367-2372. This is an example of the capability of molecular biology. Expression of human genes in recombinant live attenuated vaccines may decrease virulence and increase immunogenicity.
