    • 6 Eisen MB, Spellman PT, Brown PO, Botstein D. Cluster analysis and display of genome-wide expression patterns. Proc Natl Acad Sci USA 1998; 95:14863-14868. A system of cluster analysis using standard statistical algorithms to arrange genes according to similarity in pattern of expression was utilized for gene expression data in yeast Saccnaromyces cerevisiae. The results showed that genes of known similar function were successfully grouped together; a similar trend was also found in human data, suggesting that the pattern recognition of gene expression may be indicative of the status of cellular processes. Furthermore, cluster analysis may be a means of discovering functions for many genes.

Comprehensive identification of cell cycle-regulated genes of the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae by microarray hybridization. Mol Biol Cell 1998; 12:3273-3797. Using DNA microarrays the authors identified 800 genes that met criterion for cell cycle regulation. Furthermore, when analyzing sets of cell cycle-regulated genes for promoter elements the authors showed that several elements contain information predictive of cell cycle regulation.

By using DNA microarray technology this study was able to elucidate the temporal patterns of gene expression during the physiological response of human fibroblasts to serum. This study provides a better understanding of the relationship between fibroblast and wound repair, suggesting a broader role of fibroblasts in complex multicellular responses.
