Among the best on this topic that I've read.

This study indicates that severity of disorganized symptoms (thought disorder, bizarre behavior) is a more powerful predictor of community functioning than cognitive deficits. Suggests that symptoms present after optimal treatment, rather than during acute episode, are major determinants of outcome.
