Clinical and histopathological findings of a patient with normal pressure glaucoma
-
Wax MB, Tezel G, Edward DP: Clinical and histopathological findings of a patient with normal pressure glaucoma. Arch Ophthalmol 1998, 116:993-1001. The discovery that a patient with NPG has immunoglobulin depositon in the ganglion cell layer of the retina supports the hypothesis that the immune system may have an important role in glaucoma pathogenesis.

Anti-Ro/ SS-a positivity and heat shock protein antibodies in patients with normal pressure glaucoma
-
Wax MB, Tezel G, Saito I, Gupta RS, Harley JB, Li Z, Romano C: Anti-Ro/ SS-A positivity and heat shock protein antibodies in patients with normal pressure glaucoma. Am J Ophthalmol 1998, 125:145-157. This paper details the clues leading to the discovery that patients with NPG have false positive results to Ro/SSA antibodies when tested by ELISA because of the presence of serum antibodies to bacterial hsp60. This work establishes the importance of molecular mimicry to bacterial antigens as a potentially important autoimmune mechanism that may underlie glaucoma in some patients.

Autoantibodies to small heat shock proteins in glaucoma
-
Tezel G, Seigel G, Wax MB: Autoantibodies to small heat shock proteins in glaucoma. Invest Ophthalmol Vis Sci 1998, 39:2277-2287. Patients with NPG have elevated antibodies to small heat shock proteins that cause time-dependent and dose-dependent apoptotic cell death when directly applied to human retina or rat retinal cells.

Tezel G, Wax MB: Inhibition of caspase activity in retinal cell apoptosis induced by various stimuli, in vitro. Invest Ophthalmol Vis Sci 1999, 40:2660-2667. The activation of caspases by hsp27 antibodies in retinal cell culture provides evidence for an immune-mediated mechanism in which hsp27 antibodies in glaucoma patients' sera may contribute to ganglion cell death.
