Am J Ophthalmol 1998, 125:145-157. This paper details the clues leading to the discovery that patients with NPG have false positive results to Ro/SSA antibodies when tested by ELISA because of the presence of serum antibodies to bacterial hsp60. This work establishes the importance of molecular mimicry to bacterial antigens as a potentially important autoimmune mechanism that may underlie glaucoma in some patients.
