-

Histopathologic analysis of foci of signal loss in gradient-echo T2*-weighted MR images in patients with spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage: evidence of microangiopathy-related microbleeds. AJNR Am J Neuroradiol 1999; 20:637-642. • This correlative MRI-histopathologic study on 11 brain specimens provided confirmation of microangiopathy-related perivascular hemosiderin deposits as prevailing morphologic substrates for focal areas of signal loss in brains with ICH.

Silent intracerebral microhemorrhages in patients with ischemic stroke
-
Kwa V, Franke C, Verbeeten B, Stam J. Silent intracerebral microhemorrhages in patients with ischemic stroke. Ann Neurol 1998; 44:372-377. •• This is the first study to search for MRI evidence of old intracerebral bleeds in patients with different types of ischaemic vacular disease. Hemosiderin deposits were significantly more frequent in individuals with ischaemic stroke than in those with peripheral arterial disease or myocardial infarction, which was suggested to explain their higher incidence of ICHs if treated with oral anticoagulants.

MRI evidence of past cerebral microbleeds in a healthy elderly population: The Austrian Stroke Prevention Study
-
Roob G, Schmidt R, Kapeller P, Lechner A, Hartung H, Fazekas F. MRI evidence of past cerebral microbleeds in a healthy elderly population: the Austrian Stroke Prevention Study. Neurology 1999; 52:991-994. •• This study prospectively examined the prevalence of microbleeds in 280 elderly community dwelling volunteers without neurologic symptoms. Extensive and longitudinal evaluation of participating individuals allowed for a detailed analysis of morphologic findings and cerebrovascular risk factors associated with the MRI evidence of focal hemosiderin deposits.
