Ann Neurol 1998; 44:372-377. •• This is the first study to search for MRI evidence of old intracerebral bleeds in patients with different types of ischaemic vacular disease. Hemosiderin deposits were significantly more frequent in individuals with ischaemic stroke than in those with peripheral arterial disease or myocardial infarction, which was suggested to explain their higher incidence of ICHs if treated with oral anticoagulants.

Extensive and longitudinal evaluation of participating individuals allowed for a detailed analysis of morphologic findings and cerebrovascular risk factors associated with the MRI evidence of focal hemosiderin deposits.
