Direct binding of Reelin to VLDL receptor and ApoE receptor 2 induces tyrosine phosphorylation of disabled-1 and modulates tau phosphorylation. Neuron 1999; 24:481-489. This paper demonstrates the direct biochemical interaction of Reelin with the extracellular domains of ApoER2 and VLDL receptor, and shows that this interaction is required for tyrosine phosphorylation of Disabled-1. Mice with mutations in the Reeler pathway show also increases in tau phosphorylation, suggesting that neuronal apolipoprotein E receptors can modulate a key process that leads to neurofibrillary tangles in Alzheimer's disease.
