This report shows that immunodeficient mice can be much more sensitive to the effects of specific virulence factors. Adenylate cyclase toxin (CyaA) was not required for most measures of efficient colonization in normal mice, but was required for virulence in SCID mice. Neutropenic mice were equally susceptible to wild-type or CyaA mutant strains, implicating neutrophils as a possible target of CyaA in vivo.
