    • 1 Berglund M, Ojehagen A. The influence of alcohol drinking and alcohol use disorders on psychiatric disorders and suicidal behavior. Alcohol Clin Exp Res 1998; 22 (Suppl 7):333S-345S. This comprehensive review shows that comorbidity between psychiatric and alcohol use disorders is common among suicide victims, and that alcohol use disorders are most frequently combined with depressive disorders. Interpersonal loss within 6 weeks before suicide is shown to be more prevalent among alcoholic than nonalcoholic suicide victims.

An excellent study concerned with major risk factors for suicidal ideation among the US drinking population is presented. This discussion addresses risk and protective factors associated with psychopathology, gender roles, and treatment of major depression.

This study describes and examines three interesting models of drinking to cope with negative affect: risk factor, generalizing, and epiphenomena. The findings are most consistent with the risk-factor model.
