Int Ophthalmol Clin 1999, 39: 83-108. • Review article that stresses the role of the various components that determine the health of the ocular surface-namely, lids, tear film, and corneal and conjunctival epithelia-and highlights the interdependency between the limbal SCs and the ocular surface. The importance of a systematic approach that evaluates all the above factors in eyes with ocular surface abnormalities is emphasized.

Ophthalmology 1999, 106:958-963. • Describes the clinical course of three consecutive cases of limbal autograft transplantation that showed attenuation of function of the grafts during a course of 9 to 16 months. Possible causes of such an occurrence are discussed, and the importance of careful donor selection and follow-up of surgically treated eyes is highlighted.

Results show that early surgery is associated with slower reepithelialization and poorer visual outcomes. The authors recommend avoiding limbal transplants in eyes with limbal avascularity after ocular burns.

Arch Ophthalmol 1999, 117:1593-1599. • Using polymerase chain reaction, the authors found no evidence of human papillomavirus in excised pterygia, thus ruling out this virus as a cofactor in pterygium formation. A possible course of events that cause pterygia is proposed.

A provocative discussion questioning the need for limbal inclusion in conjunctival grafts for pterygium is presented.

J Cell Physiol 1999, 179:325-335. The TGF-β levels and TGF receptor transcripts and proteins were monitored in cultures of limbal fibroblasts on the matrix side of preserved human amniotic membrane. Suppression of the TGF-β signaling system, DNA synthesis, and myofibroblast differentiation was noted. They authors believe these to be the mechanism of the antiscarring effects of amniotic membrane.

The surgery promotes corneal epithelialization, prevents scarring and adhesion formation, and facilitates re-epithelialization after symblepharon release and provides tectonic support in eyes with impending perforation. In this small case series, AMT was found to be effective in the former two situations but ineffective as a patch for tectonic support.
