Effect of a protective-ventilation strategy on mortality in the acute respiratory distress syndrome
-
17 Amato MB, Barbas CS, Medeiros DM, Magaldi RB, Schettino GP, Lorenzi-Filho G, Kairalla RA, Deheinzelin D, Munoz C, Oliveira R, Takagaki TY, Carvalho CR: Effect of a protective-ventilation strategy on mortality in the acute respiratory distress syndrome. N Engl J Med 1998, 338:347-354. Compared with conventional ventilation, the protective strategy with low tidal volume improved survival at 28 days, shortened weaning time from mechanical ventilation, and a had a lower rate of barotrauma in patients with the ARDS. However, protective ventilation was not associated with a higher rate of survival to hospital discharge.
