The research for this article was based on Czech and Slovak published sources backed up by a series of interviews in 1998 and 1999 with government officials, representatives of the Czech and Slovak trade union confederations, Slovak trade unions representing metal workers, textile workers, education, health and mining, Czech unions representing metalworkers, miners, public employees and education, and the Czech employers' organisations representing industry and transport, construction, agricultural cooperatives plus the confederation for employers mostly in the public sector.
