59. At 245-300 nm, the azide precursor absorbs more strongly than the transient species. Thus, irradiation causes a prompt decrease in optical density, as observed in the laser flash photolysis experiments. This is followed by the slow exponential decay as the transient converts to the nonabsorbing products.
