    • The actual bulk micelle concentration is not necessarily quantitatively reflected in the CTEM images because of differences in solution viscoelastic properties that result in thickness and concentration variations during specimen preparation.

    • Wormlike micelles are characterized by complex SANS patterns that depend on specific contrast factors, micelle flexibility, and intermicelle correlations. We have modeled the data appearing in Fig. 3A on the basis of a collection of noninteracting long, stiff cylinders, using just two levels of contrast. The associated core radii and polydispersities are relatively insensitive to these assumptions.

Supported by the Center for Interfacial Engineering (CIE) and the Materials Research Science and Engineering Center (MRSEC), both NSF-sponsored centers at the University of Minnesota. The SANS data were obtained at the Risø National Laboratory in Denmark with generous assistance from Kristoffer Almdal and Kell Mortensen.
