As a test, a polymerization was performed using 20% of the amount of potassium naphthalene calculated from the stoichiometry. The polymer product that resulted gave a bimodal molecular weight distribution and contained a significant amount of PEE-OH homopolymer. Although this level of active chain ends led to a complex product mixture, we speculate that if the amount of dormant chains was less than 10%, the polymerization would proceed without complication.
