    • The Tangled1 gene is required for spatial control of cytoskeletal arrays associated with cell division during maize leaf development
    • The work described in this paper establishes that defective preprophase band positioning and cell plate guidance are responsible for the highly irregular internal cellular organization, which is observed in the morphologically normal leaves of the previously described Z. mays mutant Tan1. The paper demonstrates very clearly that severe disruption of internal cellular organization caused by cytoskeletal defects does not necessarily result in aberrant organogenesis. In addition, careful analysis of wild-type control tissue confirmed earlier observations that during normal cell division mitotic spindles and early cell plates are often obliquely oriented with respect to the plane defined by the preprophase band.

    • This paper demonstrates that the expression of GFP fused to the F-actin binding domain of mouse talin can be used to non-invasively observe the actin cytoskeleton in living plant cells. • Microtubules regulate tip growth and orientation in root hairs of Arabidopsis thaliana
    • This work demonstrates that drug induced stabilization or depolymerization of microtubules in elongating root hairs results in a loss of growth directionality and in branching. These observations suggest that, in contrast to the situation in pollen tubes, the formation of root hairs that are unbranched, straight and oriented correctly with respect to the root surface requires an intact microtubular cytoskeleton.

    • Mutations in the PILZ group genes disrupt the microtubule cytoskeleton and uncouple cell cycle progression from cell division in Arabidopsis embryo and endosperm
    • In this paper, the detailed phenotypical characterization of a group of non-allelic mutants, which show very similar lethal defects during early embryogenesis, is described. Mutant embryos are mushroom ('Pilz') shaped and consist of only a few cells when their further development is arrested. The aberrant embryo development is shown to be caused by the inability of the mutant embryos to form normal microtubular structures. Interestingly, evidence is presented to show that 'Pilz' gene products are specifically required for embryogenesis, but not for gametophyte development.

    • This paper shows that the transient expression of GFP fused to the microtubule-binding domain of a mammalian MAP4 can be employed to visualize microtubules in living plant cells. • Arabidopsis TSO1 regulates directional processes in cells during floral organogenesis
    • The phenotypes of different alleles of the Tso1 mutant have been investigated in detail in this study. The floral organs and ovules of Tso1 mutants are small, morphogenetically abnormal and show aberrant internal cellular organization, which appears to derive from defects in cytokinesis and directional cell expansion. The possibility that a flower-specific cytoskeletal defect ultimately causes the Tso1 phenotype is discussed.
