Andersson, Solid State Commun. 21, 75 (1977): high resolution EELS, frequently given the acronym high resolution electron-energy-loss spectroscopy (HREELS), differs from the EELS techniques used in our work primarily due to the addition of a second electron energy analyzer to the measurement system. This analyzer is placed in the incident-electron-beam line and serves as a monochromator increasing the overall energy resolution of the measurements. The HREELS data are often of sufficient resolution that excitations of vibrational levels in chemisorbed species can be studied. At this resolution the HREELS data are complementary to that from infrared absorption spectroscopy measurements.
