Prognosis of intravesical bacillus Calmette-Guérin therapy for superficial bladder cancer by immunological urinary measurements: statistically weighted syndromes analysis. J Urol 1999; 159:1054-1063. IL-2, IL-4, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, IL-12, soluble intercellular adhesion molecule-1, TNF-α, sCD14, IFN-γ, granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor, volume and pH were analysed in the urine of BCG-treated patients. sCD1, TNF-α, sCD14 and pH were highly informative variables, suggesting the possibility of being able to predict an individual patient's outcome.

Intravesical bacille Calmette-Guérin induces the antiangiogenic chemokine interferon-inducible protein 10

Urology 1998; 52:268-275. The urinary output of antiangiogenic inducible protein 10 and IFN-γ post-BCG and in-vitro response to stimulation of human transitional and endothelial cells with BCG or IFN was determined. The results suggested that antiangiogenesis might indeed be involved in the mode of action of BCG.

37 Witjes JA, van der Meijden APM, Sylvester CR, Debruyne FMJ, van Aubel A, Witjes WPJ. Long-term follow-up of an EORTC randomized prospective trial comparing intravesical bacille Calmette-Guérin-RIVM and mitomycin C in superficial bladder cancer. Urology 1998; 52:403-410. Long-term results of a clinical trial of BCG versus mitomycin C in an intermediate risk profile population are given. The efficacy of the two treatment policies were similar with regard to tumour recurrence.

The influence of hypoxia and pH on aminolaevulinic acid-induced photodynamic therapy in bladder cancer cells in vivo
-
41 Wyld L, Reed MWR, Brown NJ. The influence of hypoxia and pH on aminolaevulinic acid-induced photodynamic therapy in bladder cancer cells in vivo. Br J Cancer 1999; 77:1821-1827. Cellular conditions of ALA-induced PDT were examined. The response to PDT was abolished by hypoxia, and PDT-induced cytotoxicity was enhanced at lower pH values. In biopsies, ALA-induced fluorescence of tumour tissue was twice that of normal urothelium in vitro and up to 10-fold in vivo.
