    • There are differing views as to whether diplomatic support constitutes an interventionary action. Regan, for instance, argues that political statements are a regular aspect of diplomacy and should therefore be excluded. Yoon, on the other hand, asserts that more subtle forms of intervention, such as diplomatic support, must also be systematically examined. See Regan, 'Conditions of successful third-party intervention in intrastate conflicts'; and Yoon, 'Explaining US intervention in third world internal wars, 1945-1989'.

    • It is possible that other Russian interventions were not evident or were missed when the codings for the communal groups were undertaken. In some instances, information about the involvement of external states becomes available years after the incidents occur. This is an issue that confronts all large-N data-gathering projects; it must be noted, however, that with the expansion of the Internet and news coverage from every world region, it may be less of an issue in the future.
