This is one of two landmark studies investigating the long-term effects of LDL apheresis on future cardiovascular events in patients with familial hypercholesterolemia, which was conducted in multicenter in the USA. During apheresis therapy, the cardiovascular event rate was nearly half that during the control period receiving drug therapy alone.

LDL apheresis with DSC columns (43 patients) dramatically reduced cardiac events by 72% during 6.0 years of follow-up, compared to treatment with drugs alone (87 patients).
