Long-term effects of low-density lipoprotein apheresis using an automated dextran sulfate cellulose adsorption system. Am J Cardiol 1998; 81:407-411. This is one of two landmark studies investigating the long-term effects of LDL apheresis on future cardiovascular events in patients with familial hypercholesterolemia, which was conducted in multicenter in the USA. During apheresis therapy, the cardiovascular event rate was nearly half that during the control period receiving drug therapy alone.

Long-term efficacy of low-density lipoprotein apheresis on coronary heart disease in familial hypercholesterolemia. Am J Cardiol 1998; 82:1489-1495. This is the first case - control study demonstrating long-term beneficial effects of LDL apheresis in patients with both familial hypercholesterolemia and angiographically defined coronary artery disease. LDL apheresis with DSC columns (43 patients) dramatically reduced cardiac events by 72% during 6.0 years of follow-up, compared to treatment with drugs alone (87 patients).
