Lancet 1995, 345:811-816. A randomized controlled trial that compared patients achieving equal LDL-cholesterol levels using either biweekly LDL-apheresis and single drug treatment with combination lipid-lowering drugs. Angiographic results were similar in the two groups. Lp(a) lowering did not correlate with disease improvement.

LDL-apheresis atherosclerosis regression study (LAARS). Effect of aggressive versus conventional lipid lowering treatment on coronary atherosclerosis
-
Kroon AA, Aengevaeren WRM, van der Werf T, Uijen GJH, Reiber JHC, Bruschke AVG, Stalenhoef AFH: LDL-apheresis atherosclerosis regression study (LAARS). Effect of aggressive versus conventional lipid lowering treatment on coronary atherosclerosis. Circulation 1996, 93:1826-1835. A 2-year study compared patients receiving LDL-apheresis plus simvastatin with those receiving simvastatin alone. No differences in angiographic end points were observed although the LDL-apheresis group had more improvement in electrocardiogram stress tests.

Atherosclerosis 1995, 116:93-102. Patients with peripheral vascular disease had clinical improvement as a result of LDL-apheresis therapy. Reduction in expression of adhesion molecules was demonstrated and postulated as a possible mechanism for clinical improvement.
