Zanamavir given intranasally and by inhalation clearly demonstrated benefit only if treatment began within 30 hours of symptom onset. No comment was made regarding how these results should be applied in everyday clinical practice.
29. The Management of Influenza in the Southern Hemisphere Trialists Study Group: Randomised trial of efficacy and safety of inhaled zanamivir in treatment of influenza A and B virus infections. Lancet 1998, 352:1877-1881. A multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial conducted in Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa, involving 455 patients (321 with proven influenza). Zanamavir was given by inhalation only. Safety, tolerance and compliance were excellent. Efficacy was also demonstrated, but the thorny issues of the positioning of this therapy in management of influenza, and who should receive treatment are completely avoided.
