In another way to look at the structure one may consider cucurbituril as a "pseudosphere". The pseudospheres are forced to line up vertically upon formation of the coordination polymer with the rubidium ions. This vertical lineup prevents the classical hexagonal or cubic closed packing, but leads to the "hexagonal open packing" observed here.
