This insightful review carefully considers each of the ASD criteria in light of available empiric data, including that from the authors' own extensive and systematic research. The paper highlights anomalies in the diagnostic criteria, and illustrates the lack of empiric evidence for some assumptions inherent in the conceptualization of ASD.

A 6-month follow up of motor vehicle accident survivors with ASD found that only a subset of ASD symptoms strongly related to the development of chronic PTSD, and that the dissociative and arousal clusters may require revision.

This well designed study compares CBT with supportive counseling for participants with ASD, within 2 weeks of their exposure to a traumatic event. This is the first evidence of successful treatment for ASD, demonstrating the efficacy of CBT in preventing chronic PTSD.
