Peripheral blood stem cell transplantation in the treatment of progressive multiple sclerosis: First results of a pilot study
-
Fassas A, Anagnostopoulos A, Kazis A, Kapinas K, Sakellari I, Kimiskidis V, Tsompanakou A: Peripheral blood stem cell transplantation in the treatment of progressive multiple sclerosis: first results of a pilot study. Bone Marrow Transplant 1997, 20:631-638. First relatively large study of autologous stem cell transplantation for multiple sclerosis. The report demonstrates the feasibility of stem cell transplantation in this population. The preliminary results are encouraging, but follow-up is too short to show if the benefits counterbalance the cost and toxicity.

Immunoablative high-dose cyclophosphamide without stem cell rescue for refractory severe autoimmune disease
-
Brodsky RA, Petri M, Smith BD, Seifter EJ, Spivak JL, Styler M, et al.: Immunoablative high-dose cyclophosphamide without stem cell rescue for refractory severe autoimmune disease. Ann Intern Med 1998, 129:1031-1035. Demonstrates that high-dose cyclophosphamide without stem cell rescue can induce durable complete remissions in a subset of patients with refractory severe autoimmune diseases. Immunoablative high-dose cyclophosphamide is less toxic and less expensive than stem cell transplantation and circumvents the potential problem of reinfusing autoreactive lymphocytes.
