Semiquantitative Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) polymerase chain reaction for the determination of patients at risk for EBV-induced lymphoproliferative disease after stem cell transplantation

Lucas KG, Burton RL, Zimmerman SE, Wang J, Cornetta KG, Robertson KA, et al.: Semiquantitative Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) polymerase chain reaction for the determination of patients at risk for EBV-induced lymphoproliferative disease after stem cell transplantation. Blood 1998, 91:3654-3661. These authors provide evidence that increased EBV load as measured by EBV polymerase chain reaction of blood leukocytes correlates with a high risk of impending LPD. They also review the Indiana University experience with different treatment approaches for LPD including donor leukocytes and advocate early intervention.

Infusion of cytotoxic T cells for the prevention and treatment of Epstein-Barr virus-induced lymphoma in allogeneic transplant recipients
-
Rooney CM, Smith CA, Ng CYC, Loftin SK, Sixbey JW, Gan Y-J, et al.: Infusion of cytotoxic T cells for the prevention and treatment of Epstein-Barr virus-induced lymphoma in allogeneic transplant recipients. Blood 1998, 92:1549-1555. This article describes the safe and effective use of EBV-specific CTLs for prophylaxis of EBV-LPD in high risk recipients. The authors also outline the clinical course of a patient who responded to CTLs as therapy but experienced morbidity from tissue inflammation during therapeutic response.
