Radiother Oncol 1997, 44:111-121. This trial shows that accelerated radiotherapy improves locoregional control in head and neck squamous cell carcinomas, but the regimen demonstrated high late toxicities. Alternative regimens are suggested that still allow accelerated delivery of radiation.

Similar local tumor control was achieved by continuous hyperfractionated accelerated radiotherapy (CHART) as compared with conventional radiotherapy despite the reduction in total dose from 66 Gy to 54 Gy supporting the importance of repopulation as a cause of radiation failure. Reduced late morbidity was also noted.
