J Biol Chem 1997; 272:27966-27970. This paper identities the altered activation of intracellular second messenger FAK in glomerular epithelial cells grown on glycosylated matrix, suggesting abnormal interactions between cell surface integrins and glycosylated matrix.

Alterations in the expression of the α3β1 integrin in certain membrane domains of the glomerular epithelial cells (podocytes) in diabetes mellitus
-
47 Regoli M, Bendayan M. Alterations in the expression of the α3β1 integrin in certain membrane domains of the glomerular epithelial cells (podocytes) in diabetes mellitus. Diabetologia 1997; 40:15-22. A careful look at the distribution of α3β1 integrin in diabetic compared with normal rats, which identities previously unappreciated abnormalities. These are significant because of the role of α3β1 integrin as the predominant link between the podocyte and the GBM.
