Predicting long-term patterns of mass loss, nitrogen dynamics, and soil organic matter formation from initial fine litter chemistry in temperate forest ecosystems
-
We chose the larger percentage of 29% for two reasons. Firstly, in our model woody litter was also put to the first compartment and for such litter with a higher concentration of slowly decomposing compounds this percentage was expected to be higher. Second, this particular percentage led to a residence time of 5 years for the first model compartment at the annual mean temperature of 4.0°C and thus enabled using the earlier determined decomposition rates as the reference rates at this temperature (7)
-
20% was approximated for this percentage for foliage and fine root litter in Aber, J.D., Melillo, J.M. and McClaugherty, C.A. 1990.
