Alcohol consumption and mortality among middle-aged and elderly US adults
-
Thun MJ, Peto R, Lopez AD, Monaco JH, Henley SJ, Heath Jr CW, et al. Alcohol consumption and mortality among middle-aged and elderly US adults. N Engl J Med 1997; 337:1705-1714. A comprehensive cohort study of alcohol consumption and mortality in 490 000 men and women in the United States. It provides an interesting perspective on alcohol consumption and its adverse and beneficial effects on survival. In addition, the authors examine how differences in age and background risk for CVD may affect the relationship between alcohol and mortality.

Red wine, white wine, liquor, beer, and risk for coronary artery disease hospitalization
-
Klatsky AL, Armstrong MA, Friedman GD. Red wine, white wine, liquor, beer, and risk for coronary artery disease hospitalization. Am J Cardiol 1997; 80:416-420. A large, well-conducted study examining the roles of different types of alcoholic beverage in relation to coronary artery disease. The article also examines differences in coronary risk factors among subjects who drink specific alcoholic beverages. Sex-specific results are presented with an interesting discussion about the French paradox that wine drinkers may be at the lowest risk of coronary artery disease.
