    • 3 Phelan JC, Link BG. The growing belief that people with mental illnesses are violent: the role of the dangerousness criterion for civil commitment. Soc Psychiatry Psychiatr Epidemiol 1998; 33:S7-S12. This paper described changes in the public perception that mentally ill people are violent and related it to the adoption of dangerousness criteria for involuntary commitment. The authors concluded that the adoption of these criteria might have inadvertently increased the stigma associated with mental illness in the USA.

This review article aimed at discovering whether the homicide rate by people with mental illness in the community had changed over time. The authors used Home Office data between 1957 and 1995 and showed using trends analysis that there had been a 3% reduction in such homicides over that period.
