This paper examined which of the 9442 homicides in Los Angeles over a 4-year period were covered in the media. They concluded that some homicides were more newsworthy than others, including those involving children, the elderly and women.
3. 3 Phelan JC, Link BG. The growing belief that people with mental illnesses are violent: the role of the dangerousness criterion for civil commitment. Soc Psychiatry Psychiatr Epidemiol 1998; 33:S7-S12. This paper described changes in the public perception that mentally ill people are violent and related it to the adoption of dangerousness criteria for involuntary commitment. The authors concluded that the adoption of these criteria might have inadvertently increased the stigma associated with mental illness in the USA.
4. 4 Taylor PJ, Gunn J. Homicides by people with mental illness: myth and reality. Br J Psychiatry 1999; 174:9-14. This review article aimed at discovering whether the homicide rate by people with mental illness in the community had changed over time. The authors used Home Office data between 1957 and 1995 and showed using trends analysis that there had been a 3% reduction in such homicides over that period.

This study used a comprehensive sample of homicides in infants in the first year of life and examined the characteristics of the mothers. The findings are discussed, with implications for possible prevention.

This is an interesting study that examined homicide trends from 1987 to 1995 for persons aged 15-24 years. It showed a reduction in the firearm homicide rate between 1990 and 1995 across different urbanization strata.

15. 15 Bailey J, Kellerman A, Somes G, Banton JF, Rivara FP, Rushforth NP. Risk factors for violent death of women in the home. Arch Intern Med 1998; 157:777-782. This study was a large population-based case-control study that examined risk factors for violent death of women in the home. They found that illicit drug use in the home, previous domestic violence and readily available firearms increased the risk of homicide.

It gives a detailed account of the characteristics and psychiatric care of those in contact with mental health services and makes several recommendations for changes in psychiatric practice.
